Team IC3/I am Second is back!

// June 7th, 2010 // 2 Comments » // Christianity, Rides

Back in January, IC3 North Texas and I am Second formed a partnership for the BikeMS fund-raising ride on May 1. We raised just short of $10,000 for the MS Society.

The team brought new members to IC3, and lots of exposure to the I am Second ministry.

So much so that we are going to resurrect the team to ride the 29th Hotter’n Hell Hundred this year. If you are a Christian Cyclist, please consider joining us. We will be able to order the jerseys again. We are also going to ask every member to try to raise at least one dollar for every mile they are are going to ride.

Keep an eye on this space for more info as details are sorted out. In the meantime…get out and ride! Keep an eye on the temps, and take plenty of water with you as you prepare!

God bless,

Kevin

Lancaster Country Ride, 4/10/10

// April 13th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // BikeMS, Christianity, Rides

9 members of team IC3-I am Second made their way out to Lancaster, TX last Saturday for a BikeMS training ride in preparation for the upcoming BikeMS on May 1-2.

We had members along each of the 3 routes (approx 20, 40 and 63 miles) and all finished with smiles on their faces. For some it was the longest ride of the year as they work towards being able to complete the BikeMS distances.

As far as I heard, there were no mechanical issues, crashes or muscle issues other than general “soreness”.

All of us were sporting either an IC3 jersey or the new team jersey for the BikeMS event, featuring I am Second, Power 89.7 FM and Interstate Batteries.

This 63 mile route is a good one, with good old-fashioned Texas chip seal roads, a few smooth spots, some very challenging hills and a coupe of screaming descents. With only one exception, the course is well marked and marshaled. Email sent to the organizer on the exception. Great rest stops with friendly people.

I’m looking forward to this ride next year, as are many of our riders. Well done and kudos to Greater Dallas Bicyclists.

After....still smiling!

White Rock training ride 4/5, 9:30am

// April 4th, 2010 // No Comments » // BikeMS, Rides

I got Monday off, so I’m headed out to White Rock for a bunch of laps. Computer avg 16-18mph, probably with some intervals thrown in to keep from getting bored.

3408 W. Lawther in Dallas….plug that into Google Maps and it will put you in exactly the right parking lot.

Look for my green Ford Ranger. Prayer and wheels down at 9:30. If you are late, ride the lake counter-clockwise until you see me/us.

White Rock training ride

// March 19th, 2010 // No Comments » // BikeMS, Christianity, Rides

Members of IC3 and team IC3-I am Second gathered for a training ride yesterday afternoon at White Rock Lake in Dallas.

All told, we had 16 riders from 8 years old to 57, making up three different groups of skill levels.  8 of them are junior riders.  2 of them are youth ministers.  We even had a dad sporting a new bike and helmet out for a spring break ride with his family!

Some riders did 1 lap, some as many as 4.  Some of the faster juniors were doing 30 second intervals of hard effort to prep for track racing season at the Superdrome.

This ride couldn’t have been more diverse if we tried…but it worked out really well for everyone involved.

Hope to see you on the next one!

Fellowship/BikeMS training ride

// February 20th, 2010 // 3 Comments » // BikeMS, Christianity, Rides

IF the weather permits, we will be attempting to do a Fellowship/BikeMS training ride at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday 2/28/10 at 2pm

Map:

Texas Motor Speedway

5 miles, do as many or as few laps as you like, any speed.  This is a good way to push yourself beyond your comfort zone, since you are never more than 2.5 miles away from your car.

If its raining, or below 40 degrees, I will not be there…but you can feel free to go on out! :)

This is open to anyone…BikeMS teams, casual riders, recumbents, tandems, whatever.  Minors should be accompanied by an adult of course.

Thanks,

Kevin

BikeMS training ride

Yesterday was a beautiful day to ride!

On very short notice, cyclists from 8 years old to 70 came out to White Rock lake to get in a few laps of training in the sun.

Our youngest and oldest riders each did one full lap (9.3 miles), others did two mid-pace and a couple of hotshots did a full-on race-pace lap in under 28 minutes.

The wind was a bit of a challenge, but everyone seemed to have a good time.

Keep an eye out here, twitter and Facebook for more “impromptu” rides!

Spin class…avoiding the cold

// January 9th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // Rides

Junior IC3′er Landon and I went to the free spin class offered by Richardson Bike Mart this morning. Typically, there are a dozen groups rides of varying distances and pace that leave from the main shop. With the temps in the teens, Max and Sam offered up the indoor alternative at no charge. They were taking donations to Team Bikemart (BikeMS team).

This was one of the normal classes that they run during the week, and the first intensity workout for either of us in months. Landon made it about 45 minutes before I had him back off and just spin. I pedaled the whole thing, but frequently had to drop from the instructed 100 rpms to 85 to manage. We are both still in the Base period, with our first race scheduled for April. This was a good introduction for Landon to intervals, and a good chance for me to gauge his fitness level.

No doubt we’ll do some of the evening classes before they stop at the end of March.

If you get the chance, its a good bunch to spin with.

Team IC3-I am Second

The North Texas spoke and I am Second have combined to create a faith-based team for the 2010 DFW BikeMS. This is a non-competitive team for anyone that calls Jesus Lord and wants to follow His teachings by putting others first. In this case, by raising $300 or more for the Lone Star chapter of the MS Society.

Click the link above for more info on the team, or to sign up.

The first training ride is a spin class on 1/9/10 at Richardson Bike Mart, Campbell and Coit. 9am, but get there before that. $5 trainer rental if you don’t have your own…limited quantities available. bring a towel.

Steen Rose from OnTrack Coaching has agreed to help us out with training rides and plans as well: Meet Steen
